Save up to 52% on your gas bills
You could save an additional 52% on our gas bills per year if you install a passive flue gas heat recovery system when you install your new combination boiler.
A passive flue gas heat recovery system is a small unit which can fit on top of your new combination boiler (subject to manufacturer approval) and units are currently available from Baxi, Ravenheat and Zenex Technologies and all work on the same principle described below which uses the example of the Energycatcher system manufactured by Ravenheat.
How does it work?
As previously explained, the Energycatcher and similar units are attached to the top of the boiler via the flue pipe. Whenever the boiler is working the exhaust flue gases, instead of going straight out to the atmosphere, are fed into the unit where they flow over a heat exchanger turning the hot gases into stored hot water.
The flue gases then vent to the atmosphere considerably cooler, at a temperature as low as 20oC or less. This will also reduce - and in some cases eliminate - the nuisance pluming associated with all condensing boilers. When there is a demand for hot water (e.g. the hot water tap is turned on), the stored water in the unit is used used first via the combi and the incoming cold water is also preheated for domestic hot water at no extra cost, thus saving the inconvenience of initial lukewarm water whilst the boiler reaches full temperature.
